When a young woman washes ashore on a Fort Lauderdale beach, Sloan McPherson of the Underwater Investigation Unit is called in to consult. Sloan’s instinct says murder, but even then, there are too many questions.

For answers she reaches out to Gwen Wylder. The Miami homicide detective is notorious for being manipulative, bitter, a tyrant to her peers, and wicked smart. And she demands something in return from Sloan: fresh insight into seemingly unrelated cold-case murders and disappearances—and a possible serial killer trolling the Florida coast.

As loose ends of the old files begin to come together, another woman disappears. Sloan and Gwen are certain she’s the newest link in a deadly chain. They are determined to track her down before she dies, but they soon find themselves in uncharted waters. And the deeper Sloan and Gwen go, the stranger the case gets.

Sea Castle by Andrew Mayne is magnificent. I love the twisting plot and the new and returning characters.

Will Sloan find the serial killer before Detective Gwen Wylder implodes both of their careers?

We start this installment not long after the previous one. The Underwater Investigation Unit is still in its dismantled state. Hughes is off taking workshops and classes to hone his tech skills instead of hanging around doing nothing. Solar is trying to fight with the politicians regarding the unit’s future. That leaves us with Sloan McPherson, who is currently assigned to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. This is where she landed until the UIU is back.

While investigating the death of a twenty-some young lady, Sloan meets Detective Gwen Wylder. Gwen is extremely good at putting the pieces together, highly intelligent, has a super short fuse, and doesn’t play well with others. She truly gives Sloan a headache. Eventually, the two figure out how to work well together, but it takes a bit. Sloan assists her in closing two old cases, and then they start on the newest case, which a master manipulator is doing. How do they find the person? Can they find physical evidence? It is all a big game to the mastermind.

Sea Castle CRSloan and Gwen go all the way on this case. It is one of those make your career types. Neither of these two will back down.

Gwen is a bit of a wildcard. Her childhood sucked, then being a female detective back in the day wasn’t easy. Gwen’s personality wouldn’t allow her to be walked on, so she fought for her right to be there. Somewhere along the way, resentments build up, and everyone thinks the worst of her. This, of course, could have nothing to do with her attitude. Although, the perspective could have come from their treatment of her.

Sloan is doing well. She is embracing technology better than before. I think she had some serious growth during this story. Jackie and Run were present, but the rest of her family were busy doing other things.

Five Stars

My rating for Sea Castle by Andrew Mayne is five stars. I immensely enjoyed the mystery. Some sick individuals are out there, and Mr. Mayne’s portrayal of them is brilliant. I highly recommend Sea Castle and can’t wait for the next installment.

About Andrew Mayne

Andrew Mayne

Andrew Mayne is an Edgar nominated author, Thriller Award finalist, star of Shark Week and A&E television’s Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne.

A best-selling novelist and magician, Andrew Mayne has performed his unique brand of illusion on five continents, his YouTube videos have millions of views and he’s cultivated thousands of fans for his magic, books and podcasts calling themselves ‘Mayniacs’.

Taking magic in a new direction, Andrew created his own style of magic called “Shock Magic”; combining the impact of large scale illusion with the in-your-face approach of street magic. It’s fun, it’s irreverent, it’s the next evolution in magic. Andrew’s effects range from making ghosts appear on cell phones, shrinking himself to one foot tall and making a town think they were besieged by UFOs. His magic has even been performed for astronauts on the International Space Station! Andrew has invented over 400 magic effects and published 45 books and videos on the art of illusion. On the leading edge of magic and pop culture, he was among the first to invent magic for the iPhone (even before there were apps) via his website iPhoneTrick.com – that’s since been performed on millions of people.

He’s worked behind the scenes creatively for David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and David Blaine. In 2011 Andrew was invited to China on behalf of the legendary Beijing Circus to share with Asia’s leading magicians his modern approach to illusion. His 2012 tour brought him to Europe and the Middle East.

Andrew started his first world illusion tour while he was a teenager and was soon headlining in resorts and casinos around the world. With the support of talk show host and amateur magician Johnny Carson, Andrew Mayne started a program to use magic to teach critical thinking skills in public schools for the James Randi Educational Foundation. Andrew’s Wizard School segments, teaching magic and science to children, aired nationwide on Public Television.

Andrew is the author of over a dozen novels and has been nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original (Black Fall) and the Thriller Award for Name of the Devil. His recent novel, The Naturalist is an Amazon Charts best-seller and spent six weeks at the number one spot for all books on Amazon.
